6. The Slim Jim Challenge
WCW had an obsession with many different brands. They loved the horrible drink Surge (yuck), plastering images of Goldberg on their lime green cans and making Billy Kidman drape a Surge towel over his shoulder when interviewed on Nitro. But they really, really liked Slim Jims. Randy Savage was living it large in WCW during the mid-to-late 90s and became the face of the chewy meat stick for a number of years. All together now: "Snap into a Slim Jim, oooooh yeah" Which is fine. If Savage wants to do that, that's his business. Hats are expensive. What really starts to grind one's gears however is when the brand promotion starts to take over the wrestling promotion. Anyone remember the Slim Jim Challenge? For an episode of WCW Saturday Night back in 1995, the action kept cutting to a second ring that was set up outside. In the ring, with a Slim Jim car parked at ringside, Slim Jim decals wrapped around the ring post, and with Slim Jim banners in full view behind the crowd, four wrestler battled in a tournament to decide who would get a shot at the TV Title. https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=ASEcbv57AFE Watch the first minute of this video and see how many times you hear and see the words Slim Jim. Watch all 8 minutes of it and you'll only ever see Slim Jims for the rest of your life. The way the wrestlers point to the car as they pass it, ugh. It's all just ... ugh.
