4. Nobody Would Predict David Arquette

What Happened: Actor David Arquette shockingly won the WCW World Title on the 26 April 2000 episode of Thunder. Arquette pinned Eric Bischoff in a hastily-arranged tag-team match to win his partner DDP's belt. The entire wrestling world was shocked, and this might've been the last straw for some viewers who were exasperated with WCW's rubbish output.

The Excuse: Vince Russo gets full blame for Arquette winning the gold, but that's not totally fair. It was actually Tony Schiavone who hurled out the pitch in a creative meeting; Schiavone might've been half-joking, but Russo was listening and liked what he was hearing. So, plans were put in place for Dave to hold the big gold.

Arquette himself questioned the wisdom of this. He was a wrestling fan, and he knew fellow fans would hate every minute of it. WCW went for it anyway. It's widely accepted that this decision left many people disillusioned with the product. Ratings and pay-per-view buyrates were already in the toilet, but they'd get worse later in the year.

It was a swerve, bro. Nobody would ever see it coming, bro.
