10 Worst Factions In Modern Wrestling
With some terrible factions popping up in the modern era, who stands out as the worst?
For as long as professional wrestling has existed, factions have been one of the most consistently important elements of the sport. Whether at the territory level or on international television, groups such as The Fabulous Freebirds, the nWo, D-Generation X, Four Horsemen, and countless others have shaped wrestling in multiple ways.
While companies such as All Elite Wrestling and New Japan Pro Wrestling have entrenched themselves in faction warfare, stables have at times taken a backseat in modern-day WWE. Despite that, there have been factions such as The Shield, The New Day, and currently The Bloodline that have all found large amounts of success in the company in recent years. Add onto that the large number of established groups in AEW and New Japan, and factions have been a true highlight in the past few years.
On the other hand, there have been several groups, in WWE or elsewhere, that have left much to be desired. Whether it be due to a short tenure, being relegated to jobber status, or tarnishing the legacy of one of the greatest factions of all time, there are several reasons why a group might fail. With that being said, here are the ten worst factions in the modern era of professional wrestling.
10. Monday Night Messiah
As soon as Seth Rollins debuted on the main roster, he was a part of one of the greatest factions of all time in The Shield. Even his role as cowardly heel WWE Champion in The Authority was not terrible, as it led to some good matches and memorable moments.
However, as The Architect returned to lead a faction of his own, the success would not carry over. Originally being joined by AOP, Seth even captured the Raw Tag Team Championships alongside new disciple Buddy Murphy. While ranting about the greater good, Seth and Murphy's tag team success is an accomplishment that keeps the group from being any higher on this list. However, their reign would only last a month, falling to the The Street Profits, before Rollins would lose his WrestleMania 36 match to Kevin Owens and then falling to WWE Champion Drew McIntyre at Money in the Bank.
The group would then take a turn for the absolute strange. Following Akam and Rezar being lost due to injury, Seth and Murphy would turn their attention to Rey Mysterio and his eye. While this was going on, Austin Theory would come and go from the group in the span of four weeks, and Murphy would begin dating Rey’s daughter Aalyah, despite being 13 years older than the youngest Mysterio. The faction’s legacy would unfortunately be cemented at The Horror Show at Extreme Rules, where Seth Rollins would “remove” Rey’s eye in one of the strangest moments in WWE history.
