10 Worst Image Changes In WCW History

2. Mike Awesome, That '70s Guy

Mike Awesome should have been WCW Heavyweight Champion at some point in his career. The huge, menacing ECW star jumped ship while still in possession of their primary championship, possessing a lethal in-ring style consisting of high-impact power moves, and a surprising array of agility-based dives and splashes. He built up a slight head of steam, aligning with the New Blood heel stable and feuding with such big babyface names as Kevin Nash and Diamond Dallas Page. Then, for no discernible reason, Awesome became "The Fat Chick Thrilla", a man enthralled by women of a larger build. The gimmick went about as well as expected, but another baffling change was about to take place - this time visually. If his "Fat Chick Thrilla" phase ruined Awesome's intimidating personality, his turn as "That '70s Guy" took away his visual menace too. In a thinly-veiled rip-off of the popular TV series of a similar name, Awesome dressed in garish '70s clothes and hosted an interview segment named the 'Lava Lamp Lounge'. It was a gimmick of very little substance, and further ruined his natural potential.
