For months, vignettes aired promoting the impending return of Darren Young to WWE TV with Bob Backlund serving as his life coach, and on the 11 July edition of Raw, Young finally resurfaced in a Battle Royal. In shocking fashion, he emerged victorious to earn himself a shot at the Intercontinental Championship at Battleground.

It might have been premature to put him in such a spot without really building him up first, but to his credit, he was gradually getting over with the audience. With momentum on his side, he was actually favored to capture the championship that night and cement himself as a star in the process.

Sadly, the match was a total train wreck and easily the worst bout on the entire card. He and The Mix just didn't gel, and the finish seemed completely butchered, ending in a double disqualification (though nothing they did warranted a DQ). Fans were unsure how to react, and as a result, officials instantly abandoned Young's push.

He then transitioned into a program with Titus O'Neil, which was absolutely abysmal, before suffering an injury that has relegated him to the sidelines ever since.
