Similar to CM Punk and Ryback, John Cena and Rusev rekindled their long-running rivalry from two years ago at Battleground 2017 for apparently no reason at all. Both men made their respective returns to SmackDown Live on the Fourth of July episode, where it was confirmed they would wage war in a Flag match at this year's installment.

Why were we getting Cena vs. Rusev again? Cena would have been better off facing a fresh face, whereas the last thing Rusev needed was to be paired up with the man who halted his 2015 push in the first place. Additionally, their matches have never been great enough to the point where fans were fine with them facing off in a meaningless match.

WWE once again changed the rules of what a Flag match is supposed to be, making it all the more confusing and dreadfully boring. The contest dragged on for over 20 minutes, and it wasn't until the final few seconds that it was exciting with Cena putting Rusev through two tables. Beyond that, this was a complete waste of time.
