5. John Cena Defeats The Nexus
On the 7 June 2010 showing of Raw, eight rookies from NXT made the splash of all splashes when they emerged through the crowd, interrupted the Raw main event and laid out CM Punk, Luke Gallows, and John Cena. And as if that wasn’t enough, they then ransacked the announce table, the ringside area, and even the actual ring itself.
With viewers questioning whether this was real or not, it certainly seemed to have the desired effect. Over the coming months, the group became known as the Nexus and continued making a nuisance of themselves, in what was arguably the closest thing we ever had to a decently-booked invasion angle.
Of course, the phrase decently-booked isn’t one you'd apply to the angle’s payoff.
After terrorizing the company for much of the summer, the Nexus was booked in a seven-on-seven elimination match against Team WWE, which really should've ended with them standing tall to solidify their position as the “next big thing” in the company.
Instead, Cena was somehow booked to overcome 2-on-1 odds and beat both Justin Gabriel and Wade Barrett to score the win for Team WWE and, in doing so, wreck the group’s momentum. Today, just two of those eight guys still wrestle for the company, and that pretty much tells its own story.
