Ambrose kicked off his record-setting United States Championship reign on this night and he did so in pretty mediocre fashion.

The Shield were on a roll in May of 2013. They'd make their shocking debut at the end of 2012, been involved in programmes with The Rock and The Undertaker, and had just won their first WrestleMania match.

The natural step for any dominant faction is to hold all the gold and that exactly what The Shield did at Extreme Rules 2013.

Seth Rollins and Roman Reigns ended Team Hell No's reign as WWE Tag Team Champions, but before this, Dean Ambrose took on United States Champion, Kofi Kingston.

The match had an interesting structure, because it was made evidently clear that Ambrose would receive no help from his Shield buddies. Reigns and Rollins accompanied Ambrose to the ring for the start of the match, then left as soon as the bell rang.

As it turned out, Ambrose didn't need them and he won this bog-standard singles match all by himself. This helped establish The Shield as competent performers in their own right and not just strong pack animals.

Still, would have been nice for something unconventional to have happened.
