10 Worst Ways The WWE Women’s Championship Has Been Defended

2. Ivory Vs Fabulous Moolah (No Mercy 1999)

When Fabulous Moolah defeated Ivory at No Mercy 1999 to become Women’s Champion, she was 76 years old. To put that in perspective, the oldest WWF/E Champion was Vince McMahon. He won the belt at the comparatively tender age of 54.

To make matters worse, Moolah won the Championship in less than three minutes by beating a talented wrestler. The reign lasted just one week; Moolah lost the belt back to Ivory in less than thirty seconds. This baffling title change only hurt any prestige the belt had been clinging on to at the time. It failed to draw fans into the division.

Casual fans of the Attitude Era were simply unaware or apathetic when it came to the likes of Mae Young and Fabulous Moolah. All stories of their straight-laced WWE past came off as contradictory. Commentators would laugh at these pensioners bouncing around with the younger women while simultaneously telling stories of their fabled careers and how they were forebearers of the current crop.

The match here was understandably sloppy, clunky and wince-inducing - and deserves to be glossed over as another in-joke that we as fans were forced to indulge.
