10 Worst WCW Gimmicks Ever

1. The Shockmaster

It's almost unfair to pick on Fred Ottman since the poor guy has been mocked for over 20 years. The Shockmaster was part of one of the most infamous segments in wrestling history and one that would go down in history for all the wrong reasons. At the Clash of the Champions, the babyface team of Sting, Davey Boy Smith, and Dustin Rhodes were set to introduce their fourth partner for their upcoming War Games match at Fall Brawl. During A Flair for the Gold, Ric Flair's interview segment, Sting gave the Shockmaster a huge introduction and set the stage for Shockmaster to come bursting through a wall like the Kool-Aid man. Unfortunately for Ottman, David Crockett had reinforced the base of the wall with a 2x4 after rehearsals and didn't tell Ottman. When he burst through the wall wearing his glitter-covered Stormtrooper helmet, he tripped on the 2x4 and fell flat on his face on national television. The helmet went rolling onto the floor, exposing Ottman's face, and making him look like a total idiot. To make matters worse, the wrestlers could be heard making comments on live television. Ric Flair was heard saying "Oh God!" while Davey Boy Smith entered wrestling history by laughing hysterically and saying "He fell flat on his arse...he fell flat on his arse!" Meanwhile, booker Ole Anderson was backstage providing the voice for the Shockmaster and was unaware that the gaffe had taken place. He continued reading his lines in a menacing voice while Ottman scrambled for his helmet and then tried to compose himself. WCW tried to salvage the angle, repackaging the Shockmaster as a clumsy oaf who tripped over everything. Surprisingly, this did not get Ottman over with the audience. They also introduced the Shockmaster's "nephew" (also played by Fred Ottman) called the Super Shockmaster. The only good that came out of that was he referred to the original Shockmaster as "Uncle Fred", giving Ottman a nickname he carries on the internet to this day.
