10 Worst Wrestling Matches In Halloween Havoc History
6. Rick Steiner Vs Chris Benoit (1999)
This by all rights should have been a clash for the ages. Two stiff, technical, intense wrestlers with simple, violent gimmicks, launching each other around the ring for our delectation. Only, the intensity simply isn’t there. Rick, whose days as a full-time competitor were on the wane, isn’t especially interested in giving Benoit much to work with, and try as he might, even a wrestler of The Crippler’s talents can’t pull anything out here.
The Steiners were always less than fully concerned about their opponents’ safety, but Rick takes it to another level here. He drops Benoit on his head at least once, unleashing some lousy looking strikes and suplexes, and in one of the better spots kicks a chair into Chris’ face as he attempts the diving headbutt.
All the while he no-sells much of Benoit’s offense; the up and coming Canadian senses that he’s not going to be part of a classic here, and his effort levels drop too.
A screwy finish sees Dean Malenko turn on Benoit, and Steiner absconds with the WCW Television Title. This could have been brilliant but not for an overall depressing level of effort and energy.
