Some nights, things just don’t click. Masa Chono and Rick Rude are two great professionals, and another time, they could have put on a great match that the crowd could get behind. Halloween Havoc 1992, however, was very much not this time.

They’re fighting against the current from the off, with an interminable intro which welcomes a bunch of boring dignitaries before deciding who’ll referee the match, Harley Race or Kensuke Sasaki, such is the prestige of Chono’s NWA World Title.

If you’re expecting a big match feel from there, though, you can think again. The two work at half speed; in theory, they have each other scouted, but they lay in their offence so slowly that any pre-game homework is made redundant.

The ending is the final nail - Race DQs Chono for throwing Rude over the top rope; Sasaki then jumps into the ring to award the match to Chono via submission. In one of the few exciting moments, he then loses his head and batters Race for a moderate pop. The crowd, in open revolt, chants for the recently departed Ric Flair throughout. A sleeping pill of a match.
