10 Worst Wrestling Name Changes
9. Joe Hennig - Michael McGillicutty
There is a decent argument to be made that choosing to eliminate the Hennig part of this wrestlers name was for his own good. Living up to his father's legacy, Mr Perfect - otherwise known as Curt Hennig - was something he'd never be able to escape if he adopted the moniker. But, of all the choices to change it to, did it have to be this?
Joseph Curtis Hennig was born into wrestling thanks to his talented father, but he wasn't anything to scoff at. The young performer did a great job working in Florida Championship Wrestling, and there was potential in him. Which is what made his sudden name change such a disappointment.
When Hennig made it to the second season of NXT (back when it was a game show instead of a wrestling promotion), he had been using Michael McGillicutty as an identity for a bit of time. It's easy to point out the flaws in this name, as it's challenging to spell, hard to pronounce and lacks a sense of coolness. All of these factors made it impossible for audiences to get behind.
His further rebranding to Curtis Axel was better, but it's a shame he didn't embrace the Hennig name.
