And again, we find a year where, creatively, WWE could do no wrong, but at the height of Russo-riffic madness, there were obviously some decisions that would have been derided in its day had the company not had so much momentum.

The brass obviously saw a lot of potential in Billy Gunn, but they hobbled him with the ludicrous 'Mr. Ass' persona. Yes, the Attitude Era was bonkers, but the audience still wanted to take their main-eventers seriously, and they sure weren’t going to take someone named 'Mr. Ass' seriously. This was evidenced immediately by the commentary, as when Gunn won the KOTR tournament, Jim Ross’ response was soaked in indifference.

Gunn was then thrust into a program with The Rock, including a match in the semi-main event of SummerSlam. However, the creative team apparently realized they had messed up, as Gunn was completely buried by The Rock on promos, defeated handily, and paired with Road Dogg once again soon after.

Billy Gunn could have been a steady presence in the upper midcard or even main event scene, but the Mr. Ass gimmick doomed him as a singles competitor. If Vince and co. had just kept their silliness in check, they could have bolstered a man’s career instead of limiting it.
