10 Worst WWE Championship Matches In WrestleMania History

9. John Cena Vs. The Rock (WrestleMania 29)

Ah, the rematch nobody asked for.

Look, I'm not gonna harp on the "hypocrisy" of WWE having Rock-Cena II one year after their "Once in a Lifetime" match. Gimmicky taglines, as it turns out, do not count as legally binding contracts.

However, that doesn't change the fact that there really weren't any stakes to this match. Sure, you can say that this was the culmination of Cena "righting his wrongs" and finally defeating The Rock, but it just felt so hollow. Going in, Rock giving Cena his win back and "passing the torch" was just a formality. All we had otherwise was what went on in the ring. Guess what? It's not a lot.

Yes, part of the problem was that Rock unfortunately suffered a serious injury early in the match, leaving him and Cena with few options aside from trading restholds and signatures. Unfortunately, that's what they did the year prior, and when the sheen of a first-time-ever matchup is not with you the second time around, the flaws of the layout are all the more apparent.

Of course, the match isn't garbage. The crowd still pop for the big moves, but this is a match that highlights a lot of people's discontent with WWE digging up the past for nostalgia dollars.
