Speaking of dire WrestleMania matches, Shane McMahon’s Hell In A Cell clash with The Undertaker was tough to get through. It produced an epic dive, but that’s about it: the match’s other 30 minutes were disjointed and awkward, with Shane’s soft-looking offence coming off incredibly weak against a man he realistically had no chance against.

The match wasn’t even the worst of it, though. Shane made a welcome return to WWE television earlier this year, and, using a lockbox full of secrets as blackmail, he wormed has way back into the spotlight. Shane demanded control of Raw, and Vince’s answer was to throw him in a match with The Deadman. If Shane won, he’d gain full control, but if he lost, he was gone, and the lockbox would remain sealed forever.

Shane lost the match, but WWE completely undid the stipulation the following night on Raw. Vince presented his son with an opportunity to run Raw regardless, and Shane now finds himself in a peachy position as SmackDown’s Commissioner. The lockbox was all but forgotten about, and the aftermath essentially rendered Shane vs. Taker (and everything leading up to it) pointless. Looking back, the story feels like nothing more than an incredibly contrived way to reintroduce Shane to the audience.
