10 Worst WWE Intercontinental Champions Of All Time
5. The Mountie
The premise behind placeholder champions is often confusing. Why go to the trouble of changing a title to a wrestler not considered good enough to hold it generally, only to then put the belt back on the man that temporary champ beat at a later date anyway?
That was the situation The Mountie found himself in during January, 1992. A house show win over Bret Hart was explained away as a freak occurrence due to the Canadian suffering from illness, right before The Mountie dropped the Intercontinental Title to Roddy Piper just a few days later at the Royal Rumble.
Come WrestleMania XIII, a healthy Hart then beat Piper to reclaim his prize. Why not just have Bret go into 'Mania as champion and defend against 'Hot Rod'? Surely that would have been every bit as exciting as Piper defending against Hart.
Not in the eyes of WWF management; they seemingly felt it necessary to pinball the Intercontinental Title from Hart to Mountie, then to Piper and finally back to Hart in the span of a few short months. What a fruitless decision.
