In retrospect, having listened to Punk's comments on Colt Cabana's podcast, it appears his decision to walk out of WWE the night after the Royal Rumble was just about the best thing he could've done for his own physical and mental health. Whether you choose to take Punk's side or the side of his detractors, the CM Punk situation turned out to be perhaps the headline story of the year, inspiring literally hundreds of thousands of words written and opinions heard on the subject. Punk's initial departure isn't what makes this one of the year's worst moments though. It's what came after. The months of silence. The lack of communication. The eventual termination on his wedding day and the lawsuit. It got ugly and dirty very, very quick. With Punk now signed for the UFC and writing comics for DC, the chances of an eventual return to the WWE look as bleak as they've ever been. If it does indeed turn out that we've seen that last of Punk in a WWE ring, then it is the most unfortunate and miserable of ways for his glittering career to end. One hopes we can eventually get a silver lining to this whole ordeal somewhere down the line. As it stands, however, Punk's departure is a sour, bitter tale that only showcases the uglier side of professional wresting.
