Seven-year-old me has never really recovered from this nonsense. Heroic babyface Lex Luger was celebrating in the middle of the ring, on the shoulders of the Steiner Brothers while the Macho Man whipped the crowd into a frenzy. The American flag was flying high, the Lex Express had overcome that dastardly Yokozuna! Why then, was Luger not the WWF Champion?

Because the title can't change hands via count-out, that's why.

What a waste of time, energy, expectation. Much of the summer had been spent turning Lex Luger into the new super babyface, an American hero ready to vanquish Yokozuna and bring the title back to the good side. For whatever reason, Vince McMahon got cold feet and decided to keep the belt on Yoko. Lex wasn't getting over as well as Vince wanted, or so the story goes.

Ignore the fact that only 57 days had passed between Luger's push kicking off and the match itself.

The match was predictably poor but that didn't matter to seven-year-old me. What mattered was the championship. Lex Luger had beat Yokozuna, but what did that matter if it didn't come with the title? Who could have possibly given a sh*t about Lex Luger after this? Needless to say, nobody did.

Born in the middle of Wales in the middle of the 1980's, John can't quite remember when he started watching wrestling but he has a terrible feeling that Dino Bravo was involved. Now living in Prague, John spends most of his time trying to work out how Tomohiro Ishii still stands upright. His favourite wrestler of all time is Dean Malenko, but really it is Repo Man. He is the author of 'An Illustrated History of Slavic Misery', the best book about the Slavic people that you haven't yet read. You can get that and others from www.poshlostbooks.com.
