Okay, okay, stop heckling in the back. Seeing the words 'worst' and 'Kurt Angle vs. Brock Lesnar' can only be a typo, but stick with me. The famous ironman match between the two was many people's WWE match of the year for 2003, a true Broadway put on by two of the best at a time when attention spans were at their shortest. It was ballsy, and for many viewers it was a success.

However, the simple fact is that the Ironman gimmick just doesn't lend itself to a television main event. The matches are nigh on impossible to pull off in the modern age, with bookers struggling to balance too many falls against not enough. Maintaining interest in an hour-long match when everyone knows exactly when the finish is going to be is a tough task, one that I'd argue cannot be done in a television format.

Angle and Lesnar did what Angle and Lesnar do - namely put on excellent action - but the nine falls and commercial breaks meant that this match became an exercise in attention as opposed to entertainment. In a vacuum, this is decent, but wrestling television does not take place in a vacuum.

Born in the middle of Wales in the middle of the 1980's, John can't quite remember when he started watching wrestling but he has a terrible feeling that Dino Bravo was involved. Now living in Prague, John spends most of his time trying to work out how Tomohiro Ishii still stands upright. His favourite wrestler of all time is Dean Malenko, but really it is Repo Man. He is the author of 'An Illustrated History of Slavic Misery', the best book about the Slavic people that you haven't yet read. You can get that and others from www.poshlostbooks.com.
