10 Worst WWE SummerSlam PPVs Ever
1. 1995
But after plenty of deliberation, and a remarkable amount of
chopping and changing, I’ve eventually decided to knock this one on the head
and settle on 1995 as the worst show in SummerSlam’s history. You’re welcome,
SummerSlam 1995.
Ironically, this PPV featured one of the greatest ladder matches of all time, as Shawn Michaels and Razor Ramon faced off in a rematch of their WrestleMania X clash, again with the Intercontinental Championship up for grabs.
But that was a rare highlight in an otherwise very lacklustre show.
The main event saw Diesel take on King Mabel, a match that was described as eagerly-anticipated by absolutely no-one, I’d imagine. And before that there was plenty of filler in between.
Ultimately, it seems like the show badly suffered from the thinness of the roster. The talents of guys like Bret Hart and the Undertaker had to be spread out and paired with the likes of Isaac Yankem and Kama respectively. And while it was nice for Barry Horowitz to finally score a PPV victory, if anything that only highlights the dearth of options available at the time.
That, combined with the abundance of gimmicky characters—the aforementioned Yankem, and Spark Plug Bob Holly during his racer days—make this one largely a show to forget.
In 1995, business was down across the board, and at that year’s SummerSlam it certainly showed.
Now, I realise there’ll be some disagreement over some of the entries on this list, so please feel free to comment below and make the case for your favourite show. Or on the off-chance I’ve made a list that can’t be disputed, you’re more than welcome to mention that too!
