10 Worst WWE SummerSlam PPVs Ever
9. 1997
I know that SummerSlam 1997 remains a fairly popular show among many fans, but hear me out on this one.
I’ll be the first to admit that Bret Hart vs the Undertaker for the WWE Championship was every bit as good as it sounds. And Triple H vs. Mankind was a fitting send-off to the classic blue steel cage. But beyond that, the show had a few too many wacky moments for my liking.
For instance, Brian Pillman was later forced to wear Marlena’s dress as a result of losing his match with Goldust, and Ken Shamrock was disqualified for hitting the British Bulldog over the head with a can of dog food - which the Bulldog had been supposed to eat in the event of losing the match. That kind of silliness seems to undermine the show’s legitimacy somewhat.
Perhaps my opinion is also tainted by the fact that this was the site of Owen Hart breaking Stone Cold Steve Austin’s neck, after a misjudged piledriver. But that notwithstanding, I just feel like SummerSlam 1997 had too many negatives weighing it down, hence its appearance on this list.
While it wasn't a truly terrible show, it wasn't necessarily one of the best in SummerSlam’s impressive history.
