6. Randy Savage Gave Hulk Hogan His Black Eye (WrestleMania IX)

Hulk Hogan returned to action under a clear blue sky in 1993 - but he did it sporting a clear, bruised black eye.

Hogan's shiner stood out a million miles in the sunshine during his WrestleMania IX tag-team encounter alongside great mate Brutus Beefcake. Nevertheless, impaired depth perception from a swollen-shut peeper didn't prevent the Hulkster seeing his way to a comeback title victory. The result was never in question - but the source of his orbital blessure was.

Perhaps Hogan simply had one eye on the main event, but for years, rumours persisted that the mouse had been planted there by a disgruntled Randy Savage, who made a fist-first beeline for his old adversary the moment they locked eyes in Las Vegas. Supposedly, the second explosion of the Mega Powers came around as Savage held Hogan personally responsible for the dissolution of his marriage, perhaps inspired by paranoia over the WrestleMania V angle.

The truth is much less salacious. Hogan's book - if that can be considered a source - tells how our Terry smashed his face in during a jet ski accident the day before the show. Either it was an act of solidarity with Brutus Beefcake over his similar watersports injury, or a way for Hogan to prove himself an even bigger hero than his tag partner. After all, he didn't need a mask to wrestle with his broken face.

Benjamin was born in 1987, and is still not dead. He variously enjoys classical music, old-school adventure games (they're not dead), and walks on the beach (albeit short - asthma, you know). He's currently trying to compile a comprehensive history of video game music, yet denies accusations that he purposefully targets niche audiences. He's often wrong about these things.
