10 Wrestlers AEW Saved From Retirement
6. Tony Schiavone
There is an alternate timeline where AEW was never formed, and Tony Schiavone's commentary was robbed from the wrestling world. Thankfully, it's not this reality, as AEW came along to put this talented and loveable personality back on a pedestal, and boy, we sure are glad about that.
Schiavone was to WCW what Jim Ross was to WWF during the height of the Monday Night Wars. His voice was a vital part of the era. Unfortunately, fans had to get used to no longer hearing it each week after Vince McMahon bought the competition and didn't take him on.
So, what happened to him?
Well, he did appear briefly for TNA, arguing with Mike Tenay and being "offered a job" by Vince Russo. But this never came to fruition. Lesson learned; don't trust Vince Russo!
Following this, he spent most of his time working for MLW. Sadly, while it is a solid promotion, it didn't have the mainstream appeal to keep Shiavone's cultural footprint from fading.
But things changed when AEW rolled around and wisely chose to bring him on board. Schiavone's impeccable commentary and entertaining interviews are now highlights of the product, and he is undoubtedly the voice of the promotion.
