Rick Martel was a popular babyface and proved to be one of the top wrestlers in the world during the1980s for both WWE and the AWA. Martel was a three-time WWE tag team champion with Tony Garea twice and once with Tito Santana. He also won the AWA World Championship in1984. Martel’s over a year and a half reign included classic matches with NWA World Champion Ric Flair and AWA great Nick Bockwinkel.

In the later 1980s, Martel proved his character versatility when he turned heel for the first time in his career and became Rick “the Model” Martel. He had a great program with Jake the Snake Roberts which saw him “blind” Roberts with his Arrogance cologne and culminated in a blindfold match at WrestleMania VII. He also had memorable feuds with Tatanka and Shawn Michaels.

Martel has always been underrated and overshadowed. Even as AWA World Champion, he was in the shadow of WWE Champion Hulk Hogan and NWA Champion Ric Flair. It appears the talented Martel is once again being overshadowed for induction into the WWE Hall of Fame.
