Shawn Michaels may have turned a leaf after finding God and returning to the WWE in 2002, but in the 1990's there was nobody in the business more hated than HBK. Between 1995 and his first retirement in 1998 Michaels was legendary for rubbing people up the wrong way, refusing to do jobs and generally being an a**hole. He was undoubtedly talented in the ring, regularly tearing the house down. Shawn wasn't exactly humble about his wrestling talent and would often walk backstage after a good match and tell the rest of the locker room to 'follow that'. This didn't exactly sit well with some of the boys backstage. During his initial run in DX, Shawn would often go off-script and make personal shoot comments. Shawn made a comment on air that Bret Hart was seeing some 'Sunny days', insinuating that The Hitman was sleeping with Miss Sytch. This led to a backstage showdown between Hart and Michaels that ended when Bret removed a large chunk of Shawn's hair. The situation is even more preposterous when you take into account the fact that Shawn himself was having an affair with Sunny, who was in a relationship with Shawn's colleague Chris 'Skip' Candido. Shawn Michaels refused to job to Shane Douglas, British Bulldog and Bret Hart during the 90's, which a lot of the talent resented. It's ironic that Shawn played a part in the Montreal Screwjob because Bret wasn't going to 'what was right for business' when he himself had feigned injury and 'lost his smile' to avoid staring at the ceiling. The Undertaker was apparently so concerned that HBK wouldn't put Steve Austin over at WrestleMania XIV that he took him aside and threatened him with physical harm if he pulled anything. There was a lot of drug taking going on back then, which definitely played a part. Still, after he got clean and became a born again Christian there were still rumblings of Shawn being a politician backstage and trying to sabotage a couple of careers here and there and a lot of people have accused the whole Christian thing of being a work.
