10 Wrestlers Having A Disappointing 2022
9. Drew McIntyre
Denied the chance to win the big one in front of fans, Drew McIntyre worked his arse off as pandemic champion. The job of WWE’s top babyface is hard enough at the best of times; they need to balance the duel roles of in-ring hero and laconic gameshow host, welcoming people to Monday Night Raw. It isn’t made any easier when you are doing both things in empty arenas.
Over a year since fans returned, it feels like we’re still waiting for Drew to be properly rewarded for his efforts. After months of silly sword stuff and squabbles with Madcap Moss, Drew was given the obligatory Happy Corbin match at this year’s WrestleMania. Hardly a prospect to get fans salivating.
To make it feel a bit more special, McIntyre became the first opponent to kick out of Corbin’s well protected End Of Days finisher. But if he hoped for it to resonate as a “WrestleMania Moment” he was in for a disappointment. It didn’t register as anything special with the fans in attendance.
Cody Rhodes’ return has knocked the big Scot down the babyface pecking order and, despite having seemingly willed Clash At The Castle into existence, Drew still doesn’t feel like the man to break Roman Reigns' record-breaking Universal Title run. The arrival of Karrion Kross has only muddied things further.
Of course, if Drew leaves Cardiff as Undisputed WWE Universal Champion, your writer will be left eating his words, but for now it looks like the Scottish Warrior might be walking away empty handed.
