10 Wrestlers Having A Disappointing 2022
5. Sammy Guevara
AEW are making the best of a bad situation with Sammy Guevara and Tay Melo. The pair have secured some the AAA Mixed Tag Team Titles to defend on TV, but it would be a stretch to suggest that things are going well for “The Spanish God”.
In truth, Sammy didn’t have the best end to 2021either, dropping the TNT Championship to Cody Rhodes in what turned out to be an attempt to reboot a stuttering title reign. January saw him reclaim the belt in an acclaimed ladder match that earned the younger man his first five-star rating from The Wrestling Observer’s Dave Meltzer.
Sadly, what came next was a terrible all heel feud against Men of The Year. After that mess, the next quick fix was to have Sammy join the Jericho Appreciation Society.
Guevara has gone from being the breakout star of The Inner Circle to finding himself sat, once again, beneath the learning tree of Chris Jericho. While it was briefly thrilling to see Le Sex Gods reunited, there’s no denying it represents a step backwards for the younger man.
Things went from bad to worse after news broke of a backstage altercation with Eddie Kingston. Guevara claims his comments on Kingston’s physique were heel work rather than genuine body shaming, but either way the pair have been stripped of a potential banger PPV match at All Out. Sammy's public statement on the matter was hardly conciliatory, and now backstage rumours are emerging of Sammy being difficult to work with.
