Straight Edge CM Punk has rightly pointed out that Shawn Michaels was more susceptible to the trappings of fame than he was - but they also had a great deal of common ground too.

For his brilliant matches on the independent scene, Punk was being likened to HBK before he even signed for WWE, but it was during his run as an amoral anti-hero in 2011 - much of which he spent railing against the established order - that he became eerily reminiscent of a certain D Generation X member who made the same journey 15 years earlier.

Punk called it quits with years left on the clock but, just like the Showstopper, at his peak he was the best in the business - bar none.
