Despite being one of the most beloved wrestlers of his generation, Rob Van Dam could never really command the faith of WWE decision-makers.

Those same WWE decision-makers were more forgiving of personal foibles when it came to Shawn Michaels, which was as much down to backstage politics as it was the fact the Heartbreak Kid just had the slight edge over Mr Monday Night.

Only slight though, and both of them had a hand in dragging WWE kicking and screaming into the modern age. With a little more luck - and, admittedly, a touch better presentation - RVD might have had the kind of title history and big match repertoire that HBK had, and that his talent so obviously deserved.
