10 Wrestlers NJPW Should Consider For Next Year's G1 Tournament
4. Taichi
While the G1 is known primarily for its excellent in-ring action, including several Match of the Year Contenders, it's not like all 20 slots are reserved specifically for the best workers. Sometimes, you need someone who works more with the crowd than the other wrestler, often to provide comedic relief or play the spoiler in huge upsets. The biggest example of this is Toru Yano: a primarily comedic performer whose matches are usually very brief and are used to cool down the crowd between the intense, high-stakes battles.
Tournaments like these always need people more known for their character work, and Taichi is a perfect fit for that role. A member of Suzuki-gun, Taichi is a slimy, creepy, Phantom of the Opera-esque weirdo with a beautiful valet and a knack for getting the crowd to hate him. He was previously part of Suzuki-gun's Junior Heavyweight stable, but moved up a division this past spring. The peak of his heavyweight career thus far has been participating in a three-way match for the NEVER Openweight Championship at Dominion.
Many thought Taichi was set for a G1 debut this year, but that was not to be. Hopefully next year, fans will get their wish.
