10 Wrestlers Punished In-Ring For Their Behaviour
6. The Bruised Meanie Part II
In the aforementioned JBL vs. Blue Meanie match-up, it was the aid of Batista that secured the Meanie one of the biggest victories of his career. JBL was locked in a world title feud with the Animal at the time and the hope was to resolve both the Meanie issue and heat up the main event program in one go.
By the end of the match, however, it was the interference of Stevie Richards that everyone was talking about. Steel chair in hand, Richards rattled JBL’s skull with possibly the loudest unprotected chair shot in wrestling history. Busting JBL’s dome and leaving him severely concussed, Richards provided one hell of a receipt on the Meanie’s behalf. Richards has since admitted to the malicious intent behind the attack, citing it as a surreal moment in the careers of all involved.
Given what we know now about the brain scrambling impact of chair shots (something that should’ve been obvious from the get go), the footage is especially unsettling these days.
In a surprisingly nice turnaround, JBL and the Blue Meanie are pals these days. Far from the hazing of 1998 or the slugfests of 2005, the two keep in touch on social media and JBL even lobbied to get Meanie a spot in the 2015 Royal Rumble. Time really does heal most wounds.
