10 Wrestlers That Knew They Were Saying Something Stupid As They Said It

3. Steve Austin Doesn't Owe Us A Explanation

It was almost sad that Steve Austin teased assaulting Vince McMahon with such conviction before he revealed that the heel turn at WrestleMania X-Seven one night prior was actually for real.

"Why, Stone Cold, Why?!" he wailed with intentional irritation, doing whatever he could to get heat from yet another Texas crowd that weren't mad keen on booing an industry icon. He knew before the audience did that this might not be quite the success he'd hoped for, not least when he was expected to go out to the ring for such a monumental occasion with such weak material.

The principle thinking was that the character was no longer going to give the people what they wanted. "The way I got it figured, I don't owe you no explanation. I don't owe you people a damn thing", he spewed, before moving on to The Rock to try and distract the live crowd from the reality that they'd just been robbed of a payoff. Austin was so good with his delivery that he got away with it on the night too, but as the regret he'd later admit to was already simmering below the surface.
