Eric Bischoff tends to get a bit annoyed whenever somebody suggests that Brian Pillman played him like an old fiddle in 1996. Together, the pair concocted a plan that'd further Bri's 'Loose Cannon' character and trick everybody (including the WCW roster) into thinking that he'd been fired for outrageous behaviour.

Bisch legitimately released Pillman from his contract, and expected to see him push his red-hot persona in ECW for a while before returning. That didn't happen in the end. Instead, Brian used the thought of returning to WCW as a bargaining chip to get himself a better deal with the WWF.

It was total genius.

Sure, nobody really knows if this was Pillman's plan all along, but he had to know that Vince McMahon would be desperate to pull a fast one on Bischoff's WCW by signing the hottest free agent in the biz. In short, Brian pretty much manufactured his release by pretending he was just going along with some secretive booking.
