Despite wrestling without one for the majority of his career, Mick Foley donned a mask when he finally arrived in the World Wrestling Federation as Mankind. The mask itself was pretty cool and really added to the Mankind character, but the eventual removal of it helped move Foley to true international superstar status.

Without the mask however, Foley may never have made it to the WWF. Foley revealed that it was Vince McMahon's idea, and indeed one of his conditions for bringing the rather unconventional-looking Foley into the company. It could have been something that subsequently held him back, but Foley more than made it work.

We can all agree that he was better off without it though.

Born in the middle of Wales in the middle of the 1980's, John can't quite remember when he started watching wrestling but he has a terrible feeling that Dino Bravo was involved. Now living in Prague, John spends most of his time trying to work out how Tomohiro Ishii still stands upright. His favourite wrestler of all time is Dean Malenko, but really it is Repo Man. He is the author of 'An Illustrated History of Slavic Misery', the best book about the Slavic people that you haven't yet read. You can get that and others from www.poshlostbooks.com.
