10 Wrestlers The Fans Turned On
3. Goldberg Again
So let’s talk about his second run.
As previously stated, Goldberg’s shocking return in late-2016 was fantastic. As a tie-in to the new WWE 2K game, Goldberg’s inclusion meant he was called upon for some media rounds and he routinely called out Brock Lesnar, especially after their only match 12 years before was an atrocity.
Lesnar, who had become the big bad of WWE, accepted and an unlikely rematch was set at Survivor Series. Nobody saw what was coming.
Goldberg sent the fans wild with an immediate spear, and less than a minute later, he had squashed the biggest monster in WWE; the man who had broken the Undertaker’s streak and made John Cena look like a jobber at SummerSlam.
It was masterful stuff, and set up a potential rematch at WrestleMania 33. Then Vince McMahon got greedy and Goldberg paid the price.
The long running storyline between Kevin Owens and Chris Jericho was reaching its logical conclusion with a WWE Universal Championship match at 'Mania. Both men were the most popular thing on the show and the fans were waiting patiently for that burgeoning rivalry to get a main event spotlight. But with Goldberg’s return so well received, Vince relegated Owens and Jericho, and had Goldberg squash Owens for the belt at Fastlane 2017.
The following night on RAW, the fans booed Goldberg mercilessly and that aura he once carried has never returned. Thankfully, WWE never made that mistake again.
Oh, wait...
