10 Wrestlers The Fans Turned On
4. Goldberg
WWE tried to paint Goldberg like he is one of their legends, but he really isn’t. Yes, he was a major star during the Monday Night Wars, and for 18 months, was one of the hottest acts in WCW.
WCW. Not WWE.
When ‘Da Man’ finally entered McMahon Land after the expiration of his lucrative TimeWarner contract, he was thrust right into the same role as before, with Vince and Co. hoping that lightning would strike twice.
In his first match with The Rock at Backlash, the fans booed Goldberg. He wasn’t one of their own, The Rock was and he was in the midst of a sensational heel run. Big Bill’s next feud was with Chris Jericho, who again, the fans chose over Goldberg.
Triple H didn’t help matters by crushing any momentum Goldberg could have built up by defeating him at SummerSlam 2003 in the Elimination Chamber, but the WWE fans just weren’t into Goldberg as much as the WCW fans were five years before. When he returned in 2016, he was treated as a conquering hero, because 13 years had passed. Nostalgia is a hell of a drug.
It certainly wasn’t because he was a beloved superstar during his first run.
