8. Curt Hennig

In 1991, ‘Mr. Perfect’ Curt Hennig was suffering from bulged discs in his back as well as a broken tailbone, likely from being the best bump taker in the business.

Because of this, he decided to have one last (thrilling) match against Bret ‘The Hitman’ Hart at SummerSlam to drop the Intercontinental Championship. Hennig however returned to action in late 1992 and competed for a whole year until his back got the better of him and took time away from the ring once more. In between his breaks, he focused on being a colour commentator and managing acts like Ric Flair, Marc Mero and Hunter Heart Helmsley. Like Road Warrior Animal and Rick Rude, Hennig collected and cashed in on (or milked) his Lloyd’s of London insurance policy, which meant he couldn’t wrestle between ‘93-‘97.

Hennig’s back was able to able to rest and recover in those years so he was no longer able to rely on Lloyd’s of London to pay his bills, so he signed a big money deal with WCW at the height of their popularity in ’97 and wrestled continuously until his untimely death in 2003, with his last match being against David Flair in TNA.
