When World Championship Wrestling closed, Goldberg had a golden ticket.

His guaranteed contract was with parent company Time Warner, so he could sit at home for years and collect just as much cash as if he'd been on the road 300+ days a year. It looked for all the world like Bill was done with wrestling - then WWE announced that following WrestleMania XIX, after a short run in All Japan Pro Wrestling, WCW's greatest creation was coming,

After a lacklustre reign with the World Heavyweight Championship, and a worse match with Brock Lesnar at 'Mania XX, Bill was gone.

Fast forward more than a decade and Bill was back, with a rematch against Lesnar booked for Survivor Series 2016. In the buildup, he was cheered by fans who were genuinely excited to see him return. Was it all so Brock could get his win back over a decade later?

No!

Goldberg shocked the world and squashed Lesnar in the main event.

Imagine if Bill's story ended there. It would've fit his character so well, but you can have too much of a good thing.

Fans got tired of Goldberg smashing through their favourite stars of today, especially when he managed to win the Universal Championship twice, at the expense of Kevin Owens and "The Fiend" Bray Wyatt.

You either die a hero, or live long enough to see yourself become the villain.

When I'm not trying my hardest to visit all 50 U.S. states, I'm listening to music from the 80s, watching TV from the 90s, and reminiscing about growing up in the 00s. I'm currently living in Melbourne, Australia so WWE premium live events are on Sunday afternoons for me; the absolute dream.
