10 Wrestlers Who Guided Other Wrestlers To Great Performances

7. Hulk Hogan Vs. Nikolai Volkoff (WWE Saturday Night's Main Event 1985)

If anyone ever tries to tell you that Hulk Hogan wasn't great in his prime, you need to disregard whatever that person says about professional wrestling. In the early and mid '80s, Hulk Hogan was awesome, the perfect professional wrestler for his time. His ability to sell is proof alone, as getting sympathy on a jacked-up dude coming in at 300lbs isn't easy in the slightest.

Hogan also managed to get a good match out of Nikolai Volkoff, which could well be The Hulkster's greatest ever achievement. Volkoff was an iconic character but a quite miserable wrestler. Dave Meltzer isn't the be-all and end-all of wrestling opinions, but he never gave a Volkoff singles match a higher rating than DUD. Make of that what you will.

Uncle Dave didn't give a rating to this big match at the second-ever Saturday Night's Main Event, and what a shame that is. Hogan put in a tremendous performance against a typically-glacial Volkoff, excelling in every way that a wrestling babyface should, especially when taking on such an immobile opponent. The crowd was utterly molten from start to finish as Hogan whipped them into a frenzy. It was a seriously impressive pro wrestling performance.

1980s Hulk Hogan was awesome.

Born in the middle of Wales in the middle of the 1980's, John can't quite remember when he started watching wrestling but he has a terrible feeling that Dino Bravo was involved. Now living in Prague, John spends most of his time trying to work out how Tomohiro Ishii still stands upright. His favourite wrestler of all time is Dean Malenko, but really it is Repo Man. He is the author of 'An Illustrated History of Slavic Misery', the best book about the Slavic people that you haven't yet read. You can get that and others from www.poshlostbooks.com.
