Bobby Roode needs to turn heel. Of course he does. He is an arrogant prick who wears a Ric Flair robe, completely gets off on the very notion of himself, and wrestles a style so methodical it will never pop an audience weaned on fast, false finish wrestling. He is a heel who isn't even wearing face clothing.
But what then?
Roode may receive a push. Roode may cut some choice promos in which he glorifies himself. Roode may go some way towards recovering that aura he quietly built in NXT.
But what then?
He'll never really recapture it. We bought into the prospect of Bobby Roode as World Championship material in NXT because he presented himself, in quite on-the-nose fashion, as World Championship material with his Ric Flair cosplay act. The problem is that Ric Flair wasn't demoted to the midcard throughout his mid-to-late 1980s pomp. He wasn't jobbed out to countless also-rans. He wasn't stigmatised as an also-ran because, like all great champions across all great sports, he enjoyed longevity as much as he enjoyed the limousine lifestyle.
There's also the more pertinent question to consider: does WWE see Bobby Roode as World Championship material?
Probably not.
The best Roode can hope for is another midcard title run, preferably without looking like a complete buffoon in the process this time.
