A year before his Summerslam 2006 match with Randy Orton, Hulk Hogan finally went one on one against the Heartbreak Kid himself, Shawn Michaels. During Hogan€™s late €˜80s/early €˜90s WWF run, Michaels was either one half of The Rockers or was taking the baby steps of his solo career. As such, the two never met in the squared circle and the dream match of Hulk Hogan vs Shawn Michaels was seemingly one of those matches that was destined to never happen, much like Michaels vs The Rock or Bret Hart vs Kurt Angle. By 2005, both Michaels and Hogan had undeniably become true legends of the professional wrestling industry. That year would see Hogan inducted into the WWE Hall of Fame, and then the idea was put forward for Michaels and Hogan to have two matches, bulled as "Icon vs Legend", with the first taking place at Summerslam. The plan was put into motion and Shawn Michaels turned heel for the feud (or at least attempted to act the heel), and the agreement was that both legends would win one match each, leaving open the possibility of a rubber match somewhere further down the line. The first gripe in the angle was that it was originally planned as a face vs face feud until Hogan insisted on Michaels turning heel for it. That got Michaels ire, and he used his displeasure to do a fantastic promo in the form of a Larry King-type skit that poked fun at many facets of Hogan and his in-ring work.
