10 Wrestlers Who Narrowly Missed A WWE WrestleMania Main Event
6. Lex Luger (WrestleMania X)
Coming out of the 1994 Royal Rumble match, in which Bret Hart and Lex Luger had both been announced as co-winners, there was no single number one contender to the WWF Championship at WrestleMania X.
Ultimately, both men ended up challenging for the title come ‘Mania, but obviously only one of those matches could be chosen to close out the show. Plus, it would have been unfair on the winner of the first match to have both bouts staged back-to-back, so one was going to have to take place much earlier in the show.
Something had to give. Ultimately Luger was the man to take the fall.
His WWE title match with Yokozuna was bumped down to the mid-card, with Luger eventually losing via DQ in a finish hardly fitting of a World title match.
What made this one all the more unusual was that a few weeks prior to the big day, the WWF had shot a TV taping in Bethlehem, PA, in which Luger came out wearing the belt for an interview that would air the weekend after WrestleMania. Perhaps that segment had been a swerve all along, but either way, that would be the closest Luger came to the WWF title.
