Alberto Del Rio's first WWE run turned him into a star. Formerly Dos Caras Jr. in CMLL and Triple A, Del Rio fit comfortably into his role as "The Mexican Aristocrat." Over the course of four years, he became a two-time WWE and two-time World Heavyweight Champion, finally leaving the company in 2014 following an incident with an office employee who made a racist remark toward him.

Del Rio immediately showed up in Triple A as Alberto El Patron and was given a star's welcome. He won the group's Mega Championship, competed for sister promotion Lucha Underground, and started working for U.S. and Japanese independent promotions, as well. Most fans agreed that he was revitalized outside of WWE, doing some of the best work of his career.

Unfortunately, when WWE came calling back, Del Rio answered. He rejoined the company in 2015, winning the U.S. Title from John Cena. He was reportedly signed to a lucrative contract and was expected to headline, but fans soon lost interest in him and he floundered. In September of 2016, Del Rio left the promotion again, only this time, Triple A was no longer the force it had been in 2014 and the response to his arrival on the indies was less enthusiastic.
