What makes a wrestler truly stand out from the rest of the pack?

Anyone can smile and wave, add a sh*t ton of muscle onto their frame, remind the people in attendance how much they suck or call someone a b*tch to generate a cheap pop. You see all four of those things on most episodes of modern weekly WWE television.

However, it takes someone really special to march to the beat of their own drum and do things their own unique way or no way at all.

Admittedly, sometimes when a star chooses to follow their own set of rules it can lead to backstage chaos down the road.

But, often a talent can inspire generations by breaking the mould and refusing to be turned into a 'traditional' sports entertainer.

Would we have ever been lucky enough to witness Mr. WrestleMania, or see a woman main event the Show of Shows if these following ten stars tried to desperately fit in and not step on any toes? Not a chance.

Instead, they didn't give a damn about their reputation, broke the walls down and never gave up en route to becoming some of the biggest names to ever step foot in the world of professional wrestling... and they did it all on their own terms.

That now-iconic chant has haunted future Hall of Famer John Cena for what feels like the majority of his career.

However, instead of giving in to the calls for him to alter his character and turn heel, Cena defiantly doubled down on his child friendly persona.

The reason?

Cena felt that he'd been given a platform to provide hope for families and he's proud to remind people that they shouldn't be ashamed to be who they are, regardless of the backlash they receive for it.

There have been countless opportunities for Cena to go full bad guy over the years and he even came very close to turning heel against The Rock in 2012. On this particular occasion, Cena (ever the professional) was more than happy to follow Vince McMahon's orders and 'embrace the hate'. However, the boss eventually decided against it as the rewards weren't worth the risk.

He's a hero to kids all around the world and it now looks like the closest we're ever going to get to a heel Cena is his nWo turn in this year's Firefly Funhouse match at 'Mania 36.

At the end of the day, Cena knew what he was. He enjoyed inspiring millions all around the world and didn't need to give in to the 18-49 demographic who desperately wanted the Doctor of Thuganomics to return full time.
