10 Wrestlers Who ONLY Played By Their Own Rules

9. Shawn Michaels

Shawn Michaels wasn't always the easiest guy in the locker room to work with.

He was undoubtedly talented and one of the biggest stars WWF had during his first run in the company. However, there were countless occasions when the 'Heartbreak Kid' clearly fancied doing things his way or no way at all.

There's the time HBK decided he wanted to win the European Championship from The British Bulldog in Birmingham, England back in 1997, only to barely defend the belt and eventually lay down for Triple H so his buddy could win the gold on an episode of RAW is WAR.

Thankfully, his desire to only play by his own rules did actually lead to him breaking the mould in a positive way, as HBK was one of the first guys to fully become the face of the company who didn't look like a hulking weight lifter. This was due to the fact that the company needed to go in a different direction with their top guy after the infamous steroid trial in 1994.

Michaels wasn't a saint by any means, but his unrivalled charm and out of this world in-ring ability ensured that he was the clear man to take the then-WWF forward into a bold new era. Redefining what it meant to be a top star from there on out, Michaels showed a whole new generation of performers that you didn't need to be 6'4" to become a household name.
