7. CM Punk

CM Punk is as infamous on the mic as he is famous for his in-ring ability.

Even during his legendary pipebomb promo alone, he managed to roast some of WWE’s golden gooses. He mocked John Cena, Hulk Hogan, and The Rock as ass kissers, Vince McMahon as “a millionaire who should be a billionaire” saying the company will be better after the chairman is dead, and took on Vince’s “idiotic daughter”, “doofus son-in-law”, and the rest of his “stupid family”.

Punk has a lax and cynical delivery combined with a dark frustrated sense of humour. This resonated with pro wrestling’s target audience and helped propel Punk to a level of stardom that still haunts the WWE product seven years after his departure.

When WWE let Punk cut loose on the mic, great and often hilarious things happened. However much the WWE powers-that-be put pressure on him and tried to fashion him into their predetermined superstar mould, Punk’s sardonic wit found a way through, to keep even his worse feuds fresh.

Though Punk’s exit was controversial, he was undoubtedly one of the company’s biggest draws during his tenure. He became a Triple Crown Champion, sold piles of merch, and is one of the most recognisable talents in professional wrestling.
