Paul Ellering has been around as a manager for years, with his career continuing to this day - he currently guides the careers of Akam and Rezar, The Authors of Pain, in NXT. While on his many breaks from the sport, though, Ellering has pursued other interests, including the Iditarod dog sled race and politics.

In 2002, Ellering ran for a state representative position in Minnesota's District 13A, gaining the Independence Party's nomination for the seat. Ultimately, though, he only scored 11 percent of the vote, falling short of both the Democratic and Republican candidates.

Though Minnesota was already primed for Independence Party wrestlers holding office after Jesse Ventura's gubernatorial term, Ellering decided not to make another run at a seat. His loss in 2002 marked his sole excursion into the world of politics.
