10 Wrestlers Who Really Can't Catch A Break

9. Drake Maverick

What a 2020 it has been for Drake Maverick. Released in April as part of the much-maligned budget cuts, Maverick cut an impassioned promo on social media that garnered more buzz than his entire run to date, adding fuel to his previously-confusing position in the Interim NXT Cruiserweight Championship Tournament. Yes, that was the actual name of the tournament.

Maverick went all the way to the finals of the INCCT before falling short against Santos Escobar. His misery quickly turned to joy when Benevolent Dictator Triple H offered him a contract, signing Maverick to WWE once more. Was he ever actually released? Who knows, but the story itself was one of the few bright spot in recent cruiserweight history.

Maverick's reward for all of this? Well, his reward was the contract, but what has he done since? He has been repeatedly battered by Killian Dain, a man Drake seems convinced would make a good tag team partner. The two will clearly be an oddball team in weeks to come, but Maverick continues to be punched out by a big man from Northern Ireland, when all he wants is friendship. Add this to the release, the promo, the heartbreak of the INCCT and employment insecurity, and a rough time you have.

Better than peeing yourself, I suppose.

Born in the middle of Wales in the middle of the 1980's, John can't quite remember when he started watching wrestling but he has a terrible feeling that Dino Bravo was involved. Now living in Prague, John spends most of his time trying to work out how Tomohiro Ishii still stands upright. His favourite wrestler of all time is Dean Malenko, but really it is Repo Man. He is the author of 'An Illustrated History of Slavic Misery', the best book about the Slavic people that you haven't yet read. You can get that and others from www.poshlostbooks.com.
