Post-WrestleMania 18 ‘The Living Legend’ Chris Jericho was coming down from a career high of becoming the first Undisputed Champion and headlining ‘Mania against Triple H. He was tasked to work with an upcoming rookie by the name of John Cena.

Cena had debuted in June and showed some “Ruthless aggression!” against Kurt Angle in his debut. He then was programmed into a feud with Jericho, with Jericho picking up a win over him in a singles match on SmackDown by using his feet on the ropes. The following week Cena teamed with Undertaker to take on Jericho and Kurt Angle, with Cena pinning Jericho this time around with a roll-up. This led to a PPV match at Vengeance, which Jericho was booked to win. Jericho though saw the untapped potential in Cena and put his foot down to the chairman that him winning was the wrong move.

Jericho recalled:

"I remember I called Vince the night before the show and basically told him that me winning was the wrong finish. It should be John. Vince didn't see it. I said, ‘I'm telling you this guy has got something.’ Vince was like, 'Fine. Put him over if you want.' And that was kind of the beginning with John."

So at Vengeance Jericho hooked in the Walls of Jericho only for Cena to roll him up for another surprise win.
